Juanitas Kitchen is a modest, vibrant spot tucked away on Newton Street in Waltham that specializes in Salvadoran and Mexican fare. The restaurant’s size is on the smaller side, lending an intimate feel where the aroma of freshly made tortillas and spices fills the air. The walls are adorned with colorful murals and artwork by the owner, creating a personal and inviting atmosphere that feels both casual and authentic.

The kitchen leans heavily into traditional recipes, with a focus on dishes like pupusas, chicken wings, tacos de lengua, and hearty soups that evoke home-style comfort. The pupusas, especially those filled with spinach and cheese, stand out for their crispy edges and gooey centers, often earning repeat customers who appreciate the care put into the preparation. Another highlight is the selection of soups — rich, slow-cooked broths like caldo de res featuring tender short ribs — which work well as both a satisfying meal and something to warm up on cooler days.

Juanitas Kitchen is not the spot to rush through your meal. The kitchen’s attention to detail means that dishes arrive thoughtfully prepared and robust in flavor, rewarding diners who seek a deliberate, unhurried experience. The staff, including the owner and her daughter, are noted for their warm hospitality and willingness to accommodate dietary needs, fostering a welcoming environment for families and those with allergies alike.

Visitors who enjoy casual, authentic dining with a subtle artistry will appreciate the blend of traditional flavors and local warmth here. The homemade tortillas make a notable difference, paired nicely with house-made salsas ranging from mild salsa verde to a spicy guajillo and árbol blend. Besides eating in, many patrons take advantage of takeout options, often returning the next day for more of their favorites.

Juanitas Kitchen works best for those looking to experience Central American and Mexican comfort food in a setting that values community and authenticity over flashiness. It’s ideal for weekday lunches when the neighborhood quiets down or early dinners when hunger calls for something substantial and satisfying. This is a place where familiarity and craft meet, making it well-suited for locals who know their way around regional flavors and newcomers eager to dive into them.

This is one of those proverbial "hole in the wall" places that have the best food. We had Caldo de Res that had a generous chunk of short rib, perfectly prepared and very flavorful without being overwhelming, one portion was enough for two of us. The place is tiny but bright and is decorated by interesting artwork by the owner (who is a very cool lady), the vibe felt good. We will be back!

I just got home and immediately reached for my phone to write a review. It was an amazing experience we had. The food was absolutely delicious especially the spinach pupusa. The cheesiness and wonderful crunch was out of this world. We were so full but still bought food for takeout and lunch the next day. Don’t come here if you’re in a rush, perfection takes time. We love this place!

Amazing!!! The food is incredible, the team goes above and beyond. Those homemade tortillas are sooo good! You have to try the soup! Piña juice. Everything was delicious to the last drop. Will be back asap.

A gem of a restaurant! The owner and her daughter are as authentic as you can get. One of the few places in MA that makes sopes. My favorite was the spinach and cheese pupusas -- hands down the best I've ever had anywhere. They were very accommodating with my food allergies. While you're there, check out the artwork and murals, all painted by the owner!

Delicious, visually appealing, small taqueria in Waltham. This taqueria reminds me of favorite taquerias back in California. We ordered two burritos, beef and chicken. The flavors were excellent. The beef was slightly overcooked and was a bit tough, but flavored very well. The chicken was perfect. We're giving the benefit of the doubt that it was an off day. 4.5 stars for that (which can't be given, so it rounds to 5 stars). Service was friendly and fast. I'll definitely be back.

An absolute GEM! The food? Beyond amazing—every bite was packed with flavor and made with so much love. The soup was especially good—comfort in a bowl that hit the spot perfectly. To top it off, we even got a free drink, which was such a thoughtful surprise. The staff here are unbelievably kind—seriously, some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. And let me tell you about the service… QUICK. Quick service, yes, quick service. No waiting around, just great food delivered fast and fresh. This place has it ALL: delicious food, warm hospitality, and efficiency that puts other spots to shame. Everybody—and I mean EVERYBODY—needs to come and eat here. Don’t walk, RUN here!

The food that we have tried here has been absolutely amazing and the service was very good. There are only 3 small tables with 3 counter seats. Most people get take out but the few times we have eaten here we easily found a table. We look forward to our next visit!

Amazingly hospitable owner and absolutely delicious steak taco and pupusas. Beverages were homemade and really tasty - we tried the jamaica, tamarindo and atol de platano. The pupusas are quite large so 1-2 is plenty. The breads are awesome too (conchas, quesadilla). We’ll be back to try the soup and sopes. Definitely worth a visit. Also, they care a lot about cleanliness and quality so comments of things taking some time are misguided. It’s worth it. I look forward to an expansion with booth/lower seating to allow more to dine in.
